“You don’t learn if you don’t make mistakes” Rachel Montgomery

2011 AHFA Makeup Artist of the Year Rachel Montgomery has worked with Florence & The Machine, Cyndi Lauper, Collette Dinnigan, Akira Isogawa, Alex Perry and her work has been published in magazines Marie Claire, Cosmopolitan, Cleo and Oyster.

Catching up with Rachel at the Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo I was very excited to spend some time with her and find out her latest tips and tricks.

Rachel explained when she first started in the industry she worked for free for two years. Yes, you read it right- 2 YEARS.  Learning, absorbing all she could about the industry and assisting whereever she could. Things started turning around for her the day she said ‘no more free work’ and she has never looked back since.

Rachel was on stage at the expo demonstrating her top tips for on-trend colour looks and she certainly was at home on stage and clearly in her element.

I asked Rachel for some tips for makeup artists and people at home:

  • When concealing under the eye, always dot the concealer over the area.
  • Don’t highlight but coverup instead using a concealer colour on the colour wheel that is opposite to the colour you are trying to conceal. If it is blue/purple (dark circles) use an orange base.

  • Rachel recommends and uses a waterproof concealer from Makeup Forever. She also uses this product as a base for the eyelid.
  • Rachel recommends a heated eyelash curler for lashes and to use this after mascara is applied as the mascara helps set the lashes. Changing the battery to a lithium battery also helps make the curler heat a little more and helps give luscious lashes.

I asked Rachel if at any time especially when she started out and was working for free if she ever felt like giving up.  “YES” she said but the turning point for her was learning to “follow her own art of makeup”, learning “you don’t learn if you don’t make mistakes” and the minute she really believed this, deep down beleived this, then things started to happen.
